City Closes Play Structures in Local Parks - Parks to Remain Open; Social Distancing Required

Post Date:03/26/2020 3:44 PM

City of Galt Emergency Management Officials have decided that all play structures in City parks will be closed for public use effective immediately.  The determination was made in light of increasing county-wide COVID-19 infections and concern that despite the City’s efforts to sanitize the play equipment on a daily basis, use by the public, especially children, between sanitization efforts could cause the virus to spread.

Information provided by public health officials indicates that the coronavirus known as COVID-19 can remain on various surfaces for extended periods of time.  Interim City Manager Thomas J. Haglund acknowledged the public inconvenience but indicated that the decision is in the best interest of public health.  “We recognize that with proper social distancing residents may want to walk to the park for exercise, but we are unable to ensure that the play structures at our various parks can remain sanitized.  We recognize the inconvenience, but are trying to do our part to prevent the spread of the virus.”   The chart below is an example of how long COVID-19 can remain on surfaces. COVID-19 can remain on other types of frequently touched surfaces as well.

The City currently plans to leave the portions of City parks without play structures open, so long as residents practice proper social distancing when using a park.
