BI-WEEKLY REPORT - February 8, 2019
The police department will be providing traffic control for the Tiny Smiles race on February 9. There will also be a recruitment and information booth at the event.
The police department is presenting a gang awareness community training/meeting on February 13 from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm at Galt High School, 145 N. Lincoln Way. The public is encouraged to attend.
The City is pleased to announce the hiring of Michael Selling as the new Public Works Director for the City of Galt. Mr. Selling’s first day with the City is February 25. Mr. Selling is coming from San Joaquin County and has a strong background in Public Works. In his 26 years working for San Joaquin County, he has spent the past nine years as the Deputy Director and served as the Acting Director for a period of one year. Mr. Selling has held various positions at San Joaquin County including Engineering Services Manager, Senior Engineer, and Acting County Traffic Engineer. Mr. Selling graduated from the University of Nevada with a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology and worked in the mining industry before entering public service with San Joaquin County.
Mr. Selling currently resides in Lodi with his wife and four children. When asked why he wants to work for the City of Galt, Mr. Selling replied, “I was interested in taking the next step in my career and after doing some research on the City of Galt, I really liked the small town family-friendly atmosphere Galt offers. I see this as a great opportunity to use my skills and experience to help the City of Galt meet the needs of the community.” “The City is excited to have him as part of the management team”, said City Manager Palazzo.
The Galt Redevelopment Agency has received notification that S&P Global has raised Galt’s long-term rating to BBB+ from BBB. This stable rating is due to Galt’s improved housing market that provides property tax revenues to fund the bond payments. The City’s continued slow and steady efforts at housing growth has gained the attention of bond ratings professionals. Courtney Tilden was hired to fill the position of Permit Technician, effective January 28. Courtney came from the City of Davis where she was employed for over six years and served as the Administrative Aide to the City Engineer. Welcome!
Jose Avila was promoted to the position of Water System Supervisor, effective February 4. Jose has worked for the City for over 20 years. He has held various positions at the City including Parks Maintenance Worker I, II, and III (Part-time), Parks Maintenance Supervisor (Part-time), Parks Maintenance Worker I, Water System Operator I, and Water System Operator II. Jose has obtained his Water Treatment Operator Grade T3, Water Distribution Operator Grade D3, and Adult CPR/AED certifications. Congratulations!

PARKS AND RECREATION
The Galt Market will be hosting a “March to Good Health Fair” on Tuesday, March 21, from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. This event will provide free health screenings, health education, fitness tips and nutritional cooking demonstrations. The goal of this event is to connect and serve local communities and to provide awareness to the services that are available in the areas of health, safety and social issues. The 2019 Winter Bird Festival was a success with over 1000 attendees throughout the day. This year the free event offered a variety of entertaining presentations, a nature themed kid friendly workshop, arts, crafts, six guided tours being led by birding experts, educational vendors and beautiful bird artwork by students due to a continued partnership with the local schools.
Special Events/Market Manager, Jackie Garcia, was selected from the California Parks and Recreation Society to receive the Jane H. Adams Professional Development Grant Award. As an awardee, Jackie will continue receiving additional educational training to enhance her recreational and special event background, along with receiving recognition at the 2019 California Park and Recreation Society Awards and Installation Banquet.
