CAPS Volunteer Program

CAPS is a volunteer program designed for civilan men or women over the age of 50 and who donate their time to making their community a safer place. This program provides an excellent opportunity for meeting people and, in some cases, forming long and lasting friendships. Typical CAPS duties may include:

• crime scene containment
• school patrol
• vehicle abandonment
• parking enforcement/non-moving violations
• vacation checks
• traffic control
• office duty

Volunteers are required to complete 40 hours of training, which will include: first aid, CPR, traffic control, safe driving, basic law, radio procedures, gangs, narcotics, crime prevention, and more.

Graduates are provided uniforms and required to wear them while on duty in order to easily identify them as CAPS personnel.

The requirements for application to the CAPS program are as follows:

• you must be over the age of 50 (age requirement may be waved in special situations)
• you must pass a background check
• you must be able to volunteer at least 16 hours a month
• you must be willing to complete the 40 hours of training with the San Joaquin County Sheriffs office
• you must have a strong desire to make a difference in your community
